Abstract Using railway transport as an example, this paper examines the problems of improving competitiveness and estimating the efficiency of transport against the backdrop of current realities, including in the context of the digitalization of the economy and innovatively oriented designs in strategic forecasts for the development of the industry. A change in methodological approaches to determining the efficiency of accounting for socio-economic factors, in addition to industry-specific ones, is noted.
