A 6-year-old previously well girl was referred with an acute onset 10-day history of a sore throat and lump sensation when swallowing. She had a large mass protruding from the oropharynx (figure 1). Bilateral palatine tonsillar enlargement also narrowed the oropharynx. Her physical examination was otherwise normal, with no stridor, difficulty breathing or hoarse voice.
