Nearly 40 000 doctors in Delhi and Mumbai have gone on strike to demand better security in government hospitals throughout India after a spate of attacks on medical professionals. If the government continues to ignore their concerns for improving safety the doctors have threatened to call a nationwide strike. Last week a 35 year old resident doctor, Rohan Mhamunkar, was brutally assaulted by relatives of an emergency department patient at a civil hospital in Dhule, a city 300 km from Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra.
