The Indian government has agreed a new health policy programme that will introduce free drugs and diagnostic services into public hospitals across the country. The National Health Policy 2017 will also lead to a phased increase in healthcare spending from the current 1.15% to 2.5% of India’s gross domestic product. The plan, designed to help the country achieve “universal access to good quality healthcare services,” will expand existing primary healthcare packages to cover cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, mental health, rehabilitation, and palliative care.
