The Indian Medical Association (IMA), the country’s largest body of private doctors, has urged the government to amend the country’s 23 year old law that prohibits prenatal fetal sex determination, angering many doctors and women’s rights activists. The IMA, which staged a rally in New Delhi on 6 June, said that more than 53 700 doctors from around the country had expressed support for its campaign opposing criminal action against doctors who may have breached certain documentation requirements mandated under the law. The Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act of 1994 (PC-PNDT) requires doctors to maintain detailed records of each pregnant woman on whom they conduct …
