The number of patients with mental disorders who are being sent out of area for treatment has risen by almost 40% in the past two years, with some sent more than 500 miles away from home, according to figures uncovered by the British Medical Association. The BMA sent out freedom of information requests to all 54 mental health trusts and all clinical commissioning groups in England. Figures from 44 trusts and CCGs stated that 5876 adults were sent out of area for mental health treatment in 2016/17, up from 4213 in 2014/15.
