Insulin pumps are associated with a lower risk of serious complications among young patients with type 1 diabetes than insulin injections, research published in JAMA has found.1 The population based observational study found that pump treatment was associated with lower rates of severe hypoglycaemia and diabetic ketoacidosis and with better glycaemic control than injection treatment. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommends insulin pumps as a treatment option for adults and children aged over 12 with type 1 diabetes if attempts to reach target glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels with multiple injections have resulted in the patient having “disabling hypoglycaemia” or if HbA1c …
