The Department of Health in England has issued a warning to GPs who opt for cut price indemnity cover. On 12 October the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, announced plans to develop a state backed scheme for general practice indemnity in England.1 Shortly after the announcement the Medical Defence Union (MDU) said that it would reduce indemnity subscriptions for GPs in England by around 50%. It said that, from 1 November 2017, GPs who renew their membership and new joiners will receive subscription quotes around 50% lower than current levels, under a transitional benefits scheme.
