Proposals to limit GPs’ prescribing of over-the-counter (OTC) drugs will disproportionately harm patients on lower incomes and those in rural areas, the Dispensing Doctors’ Association (DDA) has warned.1 The association, which represents 1290 dispensing practices around the UK, added that the proposals could create substantial extra work for overstretched general practices, which will have to oversee drug changes and respond to patients’ concerns. The warnings came in a response to NHS England’s consultation23 on plans to restrict GPs’ prescribing of 3200 products that are available without prescription, such as paracetamol, antifungal treatments, and eczema creams.
