Robert P C MacDonald (“Dr Mac”) was a GP on the Hoo Peninsula, where he joined his brother in law, Bob Tilley, who had taken on a small practice in 1947. The practice served a wide area of rural communities on the bracing saltings and mudflats made famous by the writer Charles Dickens around the Isle of Grain, where in the mid-1950s BP decided to site a large oil refinery. This development made for a vast increase in activity and population growth, and provided an opportunity for Dr Mac to establish a visionary practice. He built a large health centre and new day centre in Hoo, and expanded a small surgery (originally a caravan) into five large peripheral surgeries. His was one of the …
