Bariatric surgery plus intensive medical therapy is more effective than drug treatment alone in reducing or even resolving hyperglycaemia in overweight and obese patients with type 2 diabetes, five year results from a randomised trial have shown.1 Researchers randomly assigned 150 patients with type 2 diabetes (mean glycated haemoglobin 9.2%+1.5%) and a body mass index of 27-43 to treatment with intensive medical therapy alone or to bariatric surgery plus drug treatment.
