Gordon E Anderson was born in Aberdeen, the son of a medical biochemist at the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow. He was initially schooled in Glasgow but returned to Aberdeen Grammar School as a boarder, during which time he developed an interest in engineering. At 18 he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and during treatment he reconsidered his career plans. Excluded from national service he applied, successfully, for a place to read medicine at Glasgow Medical College. He graduated in 1964.
