The government’s pelvic mesh audit has been labelled a whitewash by campaigners who claim that it misses crucial data and downplays the risks. In January 2018 the government agreed to carry out a full audit of vaginal mesh implants in England,1 after pressure from campaigners and the all party parliamentary group on surgical mesh implants.23 More than 800 UK women are taking legal action against the NHS and the makers of the implants. Last year, the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence said transvaginal mesh should not be used to treat vaginal wall prolapse because of “serious but well recognised concerns.”4 In February, the government announced a review, led by the peer Julia Cumberlege, which will examine how the NHS responded to worries about vaginal …
