CHOLESTEROL deficiency (CD) was recently reported in Holstein calves by Dutch and German workers (Kipp and others 2015). CD affects calves which are homozygous for a particular genetic defect, while heterozygous animals ‘carry’ the trait. A key feature of this condition, as the name implies, is the inability to maintain an adequate blood cholesterol concentration. Affected calves have been reported to exhibit chronic diarrhoea and poor thrift and die despite symptomatic treatment (Kipp and others 2015).
