I find it difficult to believe that David Catlow has really convinced himself that CVS and the other corporate groups are the prime cause of the shortage of vets seeking a career in practice because, as he suggests, too many practice owners are retiring early in response to acquisition offers they can’t refuse ( VR , 14 April 2018, vol 182, p 438). My understanding is that a significant number of them continue to work in the practice they formerly owned and that the shortage is largely the result of too many new and recent graduates being unprepared for a long-term career as primary care clinicians, as they quickly …
