Examination of the silent and generally unnoticed cooperation of Ecuador’s indigenous peoples with the fragmented left in the light of José Carlos Mariátegui’s theses shows that, despite the two’s having separate projects, this cooperation contributed to transformations that the indigenous movement had pursued for decades. This underlines Mariátegui’s call for relating Marxism to the complex indigenous reality and avoiding the extrapolation of European communism to the Andean situation.
