In 2015, the Mayor of Sellia, a small town in the Calabria Region of Southern Italy, ordered all of its elderly citizens to keep healthy because migrating youth and a lack of jobs saw its population decrease dramatically over the past few years – the elderly citizens were the only thing keeping the village alive! The Mayor’s approach is a strategic move in a country which has Europe’s largest proportion of citizens aged over 65 years and where an ongoing concern is the issue of ‘non-self-sufficiency’ due to economic and social considerations.
