The impact of social science research is often more long-term, diffuse and multi-dimensional than many STEM disciplines. Yet blunt tools like 2 year Journal Impact Factors are still used in the absence of more responsible or informative metrics, generating many unintended consequences. Individual actors like publishers or researchers may support changes to a limited degree but it is for the HE system, funders and learned societies to find more suitable ways to incentivise and recognise excellence if better measures are to be found.
