For the past 20 years, I have had the tremendous honor of organizing alongside people who do some of the most important work in the world. I am referring to the nannies who care for children, the home care workers who help elders and people with disabilities live with dignity in their own homes, and the housecleaners who keep homes safe and secure. We at the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) often talk about how this is the work that makes all other work possible. It is the foundation of our economy, of our families, and of our society. Domestic workers allow countless others to go out into the world and pursue their dreams, knowing that their loved ones are in good hands. The domestic worker movement is doing some of the most vibrant and inspiring organizing in the United States today. With affiliate organizations from coast to coast and a growing membership of tens of thousands of domestic workers, NDWA is the voice and vehicle for fairness in the sector. Through NDWA, domestic workers are organizing and winning, even at a time when the labor movement is under attack in the US and in many other places around the globe. I’m here today to share some of my thoughts on why domestic workers are winning, and hopefully to spark our ability to think together about what it means to do truly transformative labor organizing in these precarious times.
