crucial consideration in a study of martyrdom? That Pinckaers’ notes run out after his account of Thomas Aquinas on martyrdom is a disappointment. Surely also, if we are going to delve into the Middle Ages, it might have been worth speaking of the deployment of martyrological language for the purposes of the Crusades. What of these false steps, and their spiritual consequences? The Spirituality of Martyrdom has the feel of lecture notes shaped for publication, which indeed they are. There is a certain untidiness to the book, and a lack of connection between the chapters. How does each chapter build on the one before, or relate to the previous thoughts? It isn’t always clear. However, Pinckaers speaks with purpose, clarity and great insight. As in much ressourcement theology, there is a deep engagement with the text of Holy Scripture. His chapter on martyrdom in Augustine is an outstanding account—both comprehensive and brief. Above all, Fr. Pinckaers is a wonderfully wise exegete and pastor.
