The bi-annual meeting GEOMED was held in August 2019 in Glasgow, UK. This meeting had as a focus developments in methodology and applications in the area of disease mapping and risk assessment for public health. The meeting saw a great variety of presentations in specific topic areas, and as a result, a range of papers have been developed. This special issue represents a selection of the papers with an emphasis on statistical methodology. As will be clear, a range of topics are represented here. These include: linked bivariate spacetime latent structure modeling of MCI and Alzheimer’s; risk discontinuities in cancer mortality; hidden populations from misaligned aggregation levels; distributed lag modeling for malaria elimination; and review of cluster detection via scan statistics. Also, a word of thanks for all the hard work of the reviewers and editors upon which this issue is based. Finally, we would like to thank Duncan Lee, University of Glasgow, for hosting such a wonderful meeting.
