With the increasing application of acupuncture for various diseases, its adverse events have already been paid some attention. Reported infections following acupuncture include human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and skin or soft-tissue infections caused by common bacteria such as Staphylococcus. Bacterial infection following acupuncture is rare but sometimes so severe that it needs serial debridement, irrigation and longtime antibiotic treatment. Here, we report the case of a 42-year-old woman with an atraumatic glenohumeral joint dislocation associated with infection following acupuncture and discuss pertinent precautions from the aspects of four different stakeholders – namely, acupuncturists, clinicians, patients and administrators.
