Technology development in health care is broken, and academic medicine should help change it. In other industries, technologies improve the quality and productivity of processes or products and reduce costs. Health care has yet to demonstrate these benefits from its investments in health information technology (HIT). In this Commentary, we briefly review 3 critical shortcomings of technology development in health care and offer suggestions to overcome them to improve health care quality and productivity.
