It is 2 am and you are called stat to bed 76, where a 3-dayold, intubated, 600-gram infant has suddenly deteriorated. This patient’s respiratory status had worsened during the daytime, a chest X-ray showing a small pneumothorax. Now, oxygen saturations have suddenly deteriorated to the 60s. The infant looks dusky and has bradycardia at 70 beats per minute. Your resident orients you to the patient and a worried nurse is suctioning the endotracheal tube. You have little familiarity with these providers, yet the patient’s intact survival will critically depend on this team’s effectiveness.
