All through the period of my wear study started in 1977 just after my PhD work on friction, Professor Duncan Dowson provided me wise and timely encouragements and stimulations by discussions, invitations of papers, reviewing my manuscripts, giving chances of international activities, and the six-month-stay in 1992 at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Leeds. Professor Chris Taylor and Professor Tom Childs were active there and of my age. It was fortunate for me to have this experience, and now, I understand Professor Dowson’s historical view on the development of tribology and passion for young researchers. With my best respect and appreciation for them, some unforgettable personal memories of our meetings and his messages on wear will be introduced below. At the 3rd international conference on wear of materials (WoM) in San Francisco, California, March 30–April 1, 1981, I met Professor Dowson for the first time, and was in the last session on its last day when the following paper by D. Dowson and R. T. Harding was presented:
