(pp. 152–168) and, in greater detail, by Richard Young in his article on access to criminal justice where he not only charts the methods and results of some very interesting research on legal aid but also makes some pertinent and timely remarks on a current feature of the UK universities’ national assessment exercise: ‘impact factor’. I quote most of those remarks here as I fear that though ‘impact’ assessment may be one of the most important new considerations currently influencing UK research, the threat that it poses to academic integrity is seldom made explicit. (Reflexivity does not stretch so far as to bite the hand that feeds it?) As Young explains:
