This special issue of Proc IMechE Part K presents articles on the theme of internal combustion engine based on the papers presented in Powertrain modelling and control conference held in 2016, Loughborough University. A number of researchers from different countries around the world contributed to this issue which includes papers from experts in the area of vehicular powertrain technology. The papers in this issue cover areas such as thermal analysis of engine bearings, multibody dynamic study of the engine piston and transmission, clutch judder dynamics, hybrid powertrains, contact kinematics in transmission, elastohydrodynamic, lubrication and tribological studies of the drivetrain. We hope that this issue contributes towards the advancement of the research in the important and vital area of powertrain development, as well as providing a reference for readers who are involved in automotive engineering. We would like to thank all the authors in this Special Section for their hard work in preparing their manuscripts and for the help and patience of the Editor-in-Chief of the Part K, Prof Homer Rahnejat in supporting us.
