This article proposed a novel evolutionary computing method called a quantum-behaved genetic algorithm for ship local structural optimal design. The quantum-behaved genetic algorithm is based on the concept and principles of quantum computing such as quantum bits and superposition of states. Compared with conventional genetic algorithm, the quantum-behaved genetic algorithm performed more rapid convergence and better global search capability, which is suitable for the optimization problem of ship structure with hybrid design variables and complex functions. Three examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and practicability of the algorithm. The experimental results show that quantum-behaved genetic algorithm not only enhances the quality of solution but also shortens the consuming time.
