Introduction: Smoking can be defined as any consumption of tobacco derivative, whether or not it produces smoke. Nurses are important sources of awareness, acting as multipliers of prevention actions in their jobs, with the responsibility and duty to routinely speak and advise their patients about the harmful effects of tobacco usage products. Aims: To evaluate the knowledge of the nurses from Botucatu Health Care Network on the treatment for smoking cessation. Methods: Cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study. Results: The study was attended by 201 nurses, 94.5% female, with a mean age of 32.9 years (± 7.7). In the professional characteristics it is highlighted that the majority were care nurses and worked in tertiary care. The teaching of smoking control during the undergraduate course was reported by 49.5% and 20.4% reported having worked on cessation of smoking. Regarding the type of service that acted in smoking cessation, Primary Care was the most mentioned place (78.2%). It is noteworthy that 76.6% did not know the Fagestrom test and 75.1% the test that evaluates the carbon monoxide. The motivational interview was not considered as a smoker-focused approach technique by 54.2% of the nurses. Nicotine replacement therapy and Bupropion were not considered as first-line drugs by 42.8% of them. Conclusions: Nurses9 knowledge regarding smoking cessation treatment was considered insufficient and showed knowledge gaps. Therefore, the results show the need for training and continuing education for nurses regarding the treatment of smoking cessation.
