Historically, science and medicine have been almost completely inaccessible to patients and the general public. This divide was created by many issues, including inequalities in access to education, latinised language, invitation-only academic societies and closed journals. Communicating to nonspecialist audiences about research has many benefits for both scientists and clinicians.
