In “Underestimation of sudden deaths among patients with seizures and epilepsy,” Devinsky et al. aimed to determine the definite and potential frequency of seizures and epilepsy as a cause of death and how often this goes unrecognized. Commenting on the article, Dr. Gionnouli discusses the need for better education on the risk factors for sudden unexplained death in epilepsy and the need for better systematic surveillance through collaborative efforts of medical examiners, coroners, and neurologists.
