In “Poststroke Seizures and the Risk of Dementia Among Young Stroke Survivors,” Lekoubou et al. reported that of 23,680 young (aged 18–64 years) patients with stroke identified through database claims review, the incidence of seizures was 6.7%, and seizures were associated with a ×2.53 increased risk of dementia. Feyissa and Freund emphasized that these findings highlight the need to screen and treat seizures in young patients with stroke. However, they noted the etiology for this relationship is unclear because there may be common causes for poststroke seizures and cognitive changes. Lekoubou responded that they identified poststroke seizures from 2006 to 2009 and dementia from 2010 to 2014 and suggested this increased the likelihood dementia was a complication of seizures, rather than the result of a common cause linking seizures and dementia. Additional research is needed to better understand the relationship between poststroke seizures and cognitive changes in young patients.
