Health care worker burnout is a public health crisis. Approximately 20% of health care workers have left their jobs since 2020 and 69% have considered leaving, costing the US health care system 4.6 billion dollars.1,2 Initiatives trying to combat burnout exist. They often consist of individual and organizational solutions to manage stress, build resilience, and improve work conditions.3 Yet, the most successful initiatives decrease burnout only by an average of 10%, leaving nearly half of providers (44%) burnt out.3 The gap between well-intentioned initiative and remaining provider burnout may lie in feeling disconnected from meaning. A core aspect of burnout is not feeling meaning in your work, but most initiatives do not address meaning. To enhance such meaningfulmoments in medicine, we designed and trialed amobilebased application (app), THX Rx. In this article, we describe the app’s development, implementation, and preliminary results to inform novel burnout efforts.
