In the WHO2017 classification, neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are comprehensively categorized as NETG1, G2, G3, and NEC according to their proliferation and differentiation status. However, recent studies showed that the features of NENs, in addition to the proliferation index, are quite different among primary sites. Therefore, the surveillance strategy after resection must be determined based on the primary site. The duodenum is next to, and spatially close to, the pancreas. Thus, both PanNENs, especially at the head of the pancreas, and DuNENs have often been resected with the same procedure, pancreaticoduodenectomy. To date, the characteristics of DuNENs have not been analyzed with respect to their recurrence pattern after resection, especially compared with PanNENs. This study focused on the differences between PanNENs and DuNENs in terms of risk factors and recurrence pattern to determine what we have to pay attention to during follow-up after curative resection.
