The study identified 15 tumor microenvironment (TME)-related genes, including allograft inflammatory factor 1 (AIF1), as predictors of esophageal carcinoma (EC) prognosis. The prognostic role of AIF1 was further validated in another 145 EC cases. Expression of AIF1 affected immune infiltrates including T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. It is known that AIF1 expression is related to T cell immunoreceptor with Ig and ITIM domains (TIGIT), a critical inhibitor of antitumor respon-ses that acts by suppressing the functions of T cells and NK cells or by blocking CD8 ? T cell immunity (https://doi. org/10.1245/s10434-021-10928-9).
