Perioperative liberal fluid therapy is associated with increased morbidity and mortality after colorectal surgery. Apart from increasing short-term complications, it is hypothesized that liberal fluid regimens also may worsen long-term survival rates. For instance, in 2017, Asklid et al. showed shorter overall survival with liberal fluid therapy than with a restrictive regimen. However, there is a gap in the knowledge pertaining to cancer-specific outcomes, such as recurrence and disease-free survival (DFS). This report presents evidence of the long-term oncologic impact that liberal fluid therapy has on colorectal surgery.
