A cyclic compound consisting of four 10-mesityl-1,8-anthrylene units and four (E)-ethenylene linkers was synthesized by alkene metathesis, the Mizoroki-Heck reaction, and the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction as a new macrocyclic π-conjugated compound. X-ray analysis and DFT calculations revealed that this molecule had a relatively rigid square-prism structure with two pairs of well-separated anthracene planes. Remarkable solvent effects on the UV-vis and fluorescence spectra of this compound were noted.
