Regardless of whether he intended to read a book, he understood the importance of supporting the nation’s writers to foster the development of American literature. Despite its drawbacks, A Powerful Mind belongs on the bookshelves of every college library. Like the other recent work on Washington’s reading, it advances our understanding of the intellectual life of our first president.
