The book affirms Aguilar’s objective, which is “to lend visibility to what are geographically and socially unseen from the vantage point of the center and to try to comprehend the margins from the various perspectives of social, economic, political, and cultural histories” (4). The book, however, is heavy reading. This distinctive quality of Peripheries may be explained by the fact that its contents are previously published articles in scholarly journals whose readers are specialists. That being said, the book remains a valuable contribution to studies in antimarginality.
