Fermat's principle is used to study the refraction of extraordinary rays into and out of uniaxial crystals with arbitrary optic axis orientations. The method produces direct formulas for the direction cosines of the refracted rays without the need of calculating intermediate quantities. The formulas are validated by comparing them with previous ray-tracing methods.
