Red-crowned cranes (丹顶鹤), also known as Manchurian or Japanese cranes, are the largest, heaviest, and rarest of cranes in the world, typically measuring about 155 cm in height, 125 cm in length from bill to tail-tip, 235 cm of an average wingspan, and up to 11 kg in weight. Currently, these cranes are found in only China (north-eastern region), Russia (bordering China), Mongolia, North and South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. The International Crane Foundation has estimated that the present numbers are only about 3000 and these appear to be declining. This crane is now an endangered species.
