Professor William Hubbard of the University of Chicago Law School published a comment on my article entitled, “Call for a New Analytical Model for Law and Development,” following his presentation at an international conference in law and development that I co-hosted with Tulane Law School in 2015. My article recounts the evolution of law and development studies for the past four decades, examines the necessity and feasibility of developing the Analytical Law and Development Model, or “ADM,” and considers relevant methodology issues. Professor Hubbard’s comment raises pertinent questions with respect to the arguments advanced by the article, including the need to focus on economic development in the context of law and development studies. This response considers these questions and makes further clarifications, in hopes to invite attention to the field and inspire further dialogue among scholars, policy makers, practitioners, and students.
