Abstract We seek to understand the notion of meaning as Greimas has developed it in his work. In the first part, we seek the origin of this concept in linguistic and phenomenological sources of his thought. To this end, we confront Husserl’s phenomenological conception of meaning and Saussure’s linguistic conception, as a backdrop to our investigation. Secondly, we consider more specifically the thesis of the ideality of the semiotic fact as Greimas conceived it. We also compare the thesis of the ideality of meaning in Husserl and the thesis of semiotic ideality in Greimas.
