Purpose: Youth in foster care are prescribed psychotropic medications at a rate 3 times higher than other Medicaid youth, and have a higher rate of polypharmacy. Children in foster care are also more likely to stay on these medications for longer than their Medicaid matched peers. Federal legislation has mandated increased oversight of psychotropic medications in this population, but limited data exist on the most effective strategy to accomplish this.
