PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Acid suppressing medications (proton pump inhibitors [PPI] and histamine-2 receptor antagonists [H2RA]) are used extensively in hospitalized term and preterm neonates despite limited efficacy data and increasing evidence for potential harm in this vulnerable population. The unfavorable risk-benefit ratio of PPI/H2RAs in newborns recently highlighted by the Choosing Wisely campaign prompted our team to develop a quality improvement initiative to reduce inappropriate use of these medications in our level III/IV NICU.
