Delayed recognition of hospitalized pediatric patients deteriorating outside the ICU increases morbidity and mortality. Pediatric early warning systems (PEWS), which include a subjective assessment, have been studied with varying detection success The study institution has used Monaghan’s PEWS to evaluate non-ICU patients in efforts to eliminate emergency transfers and preventable codes outside the ICU. Utilizing a threshold of PEWS ≥ 5, the ability to predict inpatient deterioration has been inconsistent with detection rates of codes outside the ICU less than 33%.
