Purpose: In medical settings, the majority of patients and families enter medical care with pre-existing exposure to emotional trauma; in addition, they often experience new emotional trauma in context of their medical condition and / or medical treatment. The presence of emotional trauma reactions has the capacity to greatly impact the way in which patients and families experience subsequent medical care. Further, many healthcare providers are exposed to potentially traumatizing medical events in their patients on a daily basis, which may contribute to secondary trauma reactions, burnout and turnover.
