Purpose: In medical settings, the majority of patients and families enter medical care with pre-existing exposure to emotional trauma; in addition, they often experience new emotional trauma in context of their medical condition and / or medical treatment. The presence of emotional trauma reactions has the capacity to greatly impact the way in which patients and families experience subsequent medical care.
