Background: Of all sexual assaults in the US, 44% of them are perpetrated against victims less than 18 years of age. The standard adopted by the Ohio Department of Health is for forensic evidence collection to be performed or supervised only by a physician or nurse practitioner (NP) trained and experienced in the evaluation of child sexual abuse. Timing of evidence collection is essential. In a study of 273 children less than 10 years of age, no swabs collected after 9 hours were positive for semen. …
