Introduction: “Swimmer’s shoulder” is the colloquial phrase describing pain and injury in the anterolateral region of the shoulder, and is reported by 40-91% of adolescents competitive swimmers (1-3). In similar overhead sports where overuse injuries are common (e.g. baseball), official guidelines recommend vigilance when young athletes report upper extremity pain (4). However, no guidelines exist for competitive swimming. Yet, early detection of shoulder pain is imperative to long-term health of athletes, as shoulder pain can signal imminent overuse injury (4). Given that over 8 in 10 competitive adolescent swimmers express reluctance towards rest time for recovery, communication with peers, parents, and coaches is essential for awareness of symptoms preceding necessary interventions …
