ABSTRACT Specimens of the African snail Achatina fulica, collected in Bucaramanga, Colombia, were examined for parasites. Numerous specimens of Caenorhabditis briggsae were collected from the digestive tract of the snails and identified by the structure of male spiculum, caudal bursa, gubernaculum and precloacal lip in males, triangular tooth in metarhabdion, and protandrous hermaphrodites with a female:male ratio of 15:1 and with morphometry. DNA sequences of the ITS2 region of the ribosomal gene array from worms in this study matched with 99% similarity to published sequences of C. briggsae. A redescription of the species is provided. This is the first record of the species in South America.
